The Best Posture for Sleeping: Back, Side or Front?
· 1 min
In short
There is no single perfect sleeping position, but small changes to how you lie and how you use pillows can make mornings more comfortable.
Most of us change position many times during the night, so there is no need to train yourself into one “correct” posture. What helps is understanding how each position affects your neck and back, and using pillows to keep your spine in a comfortable line.
Sleeping on your back
Lying on your back spreads your weight evenly and keeps the head, neck and spine fairly well aligned. A pillow under the knees can ease pressure on the lower back. Some people find that back sleeping makes snoring worse; if that is you, side sleeping may suit you better.
Sleeping on your side
Side sleeping is the most common position. To keep it comfortable:
- Choose a pillow that fills the gap between your ear and shoulder, so your head is not tilted up or down.
- Bend your knees slightly and place a pillow between them to keep your hips level.
- Avoid curling up too tightly, which can leave you stiff in the morning.
Sleeping on your front
Front sleeping turns the head to one side for hours and can arch the lower back. If it is the only way you can sleep, try a very flat pillow — or none — under your head, and a thin pillow under your hips.
Your mattress and pillows
A mattress that is too soft or too firm can make any position uncomfortable. Pillows lose their shape over time, so if you regularly wake with a stiff neck, it may be time for a new one.
Daytime posture matters too
How you sit during the day affects how you feel at night. Our guide to desk posture adjustments covers simple changes, and a few minutes of slow breathing before bed can help you settle.
When to get advice
If you have ongoing back or neck pain, pain that wakes you, or numbness and tingling, see your GP or a physiotherapist. If you are pregnant, your midwife can advise on comfortable sleeping positions.
